However, some people vary the Ko uchi gari action so that it is more like an O uchi gari action. Experiment to find your personal preference.

In O uchi gari, well the simplest explanation is to post this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NrAH_7Yxzg

In the method Yamashita demonstrates a good way of remembering it is like opening a pair of curtains. Except obviously with a Judo style grip and maintaining chest contact with the tsurite forearm.

There are other methods where you take uke's jacket completely over their shoulder. Also often when throwing an advancing uke tori will perfrom a more looping action with the tsurite hand. Attacking as Yamashita shows in the video then applying pressure downwards.

In general the hikite hand should be in a drawing out action as Yamashita shows in the video with it also being drawn down towards your own hip. So that uke's weight is pinned on his heels.

In O soto gari and Ko soto gari it can, however, be different action. If you're significantly taller than your uke, and only in that case, for O soto gari you should draw them outwards and upwards trying to maitain their sleeve at your chest height. If attacking, holding right handed, with Ko soto gari against uke's left leg then your hikite should draw them outwards and upwards as this will transfer the majority of weight onto their left foot when combined with a tsurite hand action similar to O uchi gari.

For a visual explanation see here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDdj1YAEg6Q

What you must bear in mind is that you want to transfer uke's weight onto the heel of the foot you're attacking. That should help guide you in your kuzushi action.nonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16135132113588185814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676932401991706779.post-33150538579866432142011-02-01T05:53:30.930+00:002011-02-01T05:53:30.930+00:00Very helpful article. You said that o...Very helpful article. Thank you.

You said that on the majority of throws tori's tsurite drives toward uke's chin. I assume that would be the throws where you attack uke's right leg (assuming right-handed players). What about when you attack the left leg as in o-uchi-gari? Does the tsurite pull downward? (Would it still be called tsurite when it's not lifting?)

What does the other arm do?Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13442189361752007908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676932401991706779.post-81031132531128604512011-01-31T02:33:19.481+00:002011-01-31T02:33:19.481+00:00Wonderful- shoot me an email at ysc87@hotmail.com ...Wonderful- shoot me an email at ysc87@hotmail.com and I'll send you over the details.Punch Kick Chokehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04890450567953939659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676932401991706779.post-4071777337889866532011-01-30T23:17:40.639+00:002011-01-30T23:17:40.639+00:00Hey there, saw that you're a bs.net member, an...Hey there, saw that you're a bs.net member, and I really like your technical breakdown of judo throws- would you like to be a guest blogger on punchkickchoke.blogspot.com ?

I think my readers would really enjoy it, and hopefully it would drive new readers toward your page, not to mention that you would be able to provide better insight into judo than I can.

Drop a comment on my site if you'd be interested in such a thing.
-YPunch Kick Chokehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04890450567953939659noreply@blogger.com
